Shed Pads & Garage Slabs
Garage slabs and shed hardstands
This is the working end of what we pour. A pad under a shed, a slab in a garage, a hardstand for a trailer or a caravan. Nobody photographs these for a magazine, but they are the jobs where getting the specification right matters most, because a decorative surface that cracks is annoying and a hardstand that cracks is expensive.
We do not do house slabs. That is a different trade with different engineering and different certification, and we would rather point you to someone who does them properly than have a go.
Trowelled on site, in one run
A shed floor is finished with a power trowel, and the window for that is not long. The slab has to be hard enough to walk the machine onto and soft enough to still be worked, which on a hot open block with no shelter can be a short afternoon. There is no coming back tomorrow to fix a floor that went off while somebody was looking for a trowel.
That is the whole job on a pad: get the levels right, get enough people and enough machine on it, and finish it in one run. A big span done in stages shows you where the stages were, for as long as the shed is standing.
What actually decides whether it lasts
The load, honestly stated. A pad that will only ever have a mower and some shelving is a different specification from one holding a caravan, a boat trailer or a hoist. Tell us what is going on it, including what might go on it in five years, and the thickness and reinforcement get set accordingly.
Compaction. Perth sand compacts well but it has to be done and it has to be done properly. This is the invisible half of the job and it is where a cheap quote saves its money.
Reinforcement. Mesh, bar, or both depending on the load and the span. Not optional on anything carrying weight.
Where the water goes. A shed floor should shed water out of the door, not collect it at the back wall. A hardstand needs fall so it does not sit wet. Getting this wrong shows up the first winter.
Finishes for a working surface
Machine trowelled for a shed or garage floor, which gives a hard, smooth, easy-to-sweep surface that takes a coating later if you want one. Brush finish outdoors, which gives grip on a slope and in the wet. Neither is decorative and neither needs to be.
If you want the pad to look like something as well, say so and we will talk about it, but for most of these jobs the money is better in the base.
Small commercial
Factory and warehouse floors and commercial hardstands are the same job at a larger scale, and we take them. See commercial concrete.
