Concreters in Duncraig
Duncraig · Limecrete Coral White, honed
Pools and driveways are most of our Duncraig work
The two jobs on this page are the two we get asked for most in Duncraig, and they are a good illustration of why the same mix can do two completely different things.
A honed pool surround, carried through to the patio
We poured honed concrete surrounds around a backyard pool here, including the steps, and ran the same surface out to the patio rather than stopping it at the coping. On a block this size the concrete around a pool is the backyard, not a border around the water, so treating it as one surface is what makes the yard feel finished instead of chopped into zones.
Honed is the right call around water. Ground back, it is smooth underfoot without being slippery, it is comfortable barefoot in summer, and in a pale mix like Coral White it does not hold heat the way a dark surface does.
A 200 square metre driveway, taken out and replaced
The second job was a full driveway rip out and replace, about 200 square metres, finished in exposed aggregate. It runs up between curved rendered retaining walls to a double garage, and we poured the side access in the same mix so the whole approach matches.
Exposed was the right finish there for the opposite reason to the pool. It keeps the stone proud of the surface, which gives grip on a driveway that has a slope on it and hides the marks a driveway inevitably collects.
Same mix, two finishes
Both jobs came out of Limecrete Coral White. One honed, one exposed. That is worth knowing if you are doing your pool and your driveway at different times: choosing the mix once and changing only the finish is how you keep a property looking deliberate rather than like a series of separate quotes.
The base is what fails, not the concrete
Most of the cracked driveways we take out in the older parts of Duncraig were not poured badly. They were poured on sand with almost no base under them, which was normal at the time. The slab then moves because what is underneath it moves.
That is why a replacement is worth more than a repair here. If the preparation underneath is done properly, the new slab has something to sit on. If it is not, you will be looking at the same cracks in the same places in a few years.
