One mix, front to back

The job shown here is the kind of thing Carine blocks lend themselves to. A honed driveway at the front, carried through the carport, down the side and out to an entertaining area at the back, all in the same pale Limecrete Coral White.

It is a bigger job than a driveway on its own, and it is worth it for a reason that is easy to see once it is done: nothing on the property fights with anything else. When a driveway gets replaced in isolation, it almost never matches the patio that was poured a decade earlier, and the eye picks that up immediately even when nobody can say why.

The bench seat was poured, not added

The curved seat in the back corner was formed as part of the work rather than bought and placed. That is a genuinely different thing to putting furniture on a slab. It reads as part of the structure of the yard, it does not move, it does not need storing over winter, and in the same mix as the floor it looks like it grew out of the ground rather than landing on it.

Built-in seating like this is worth raising early if you want it, because it changes how the area gets set out and it has to be planned before the pour, not after.

Why honed suits this kind of block

Honed concrete is ground back after it cures, which brings up the stone and leaves a smooth, even surface. On an entertaining area that matters underfoot, because it is comfortable barefoot and it does not catch on furniture being dragged around.

In a pale mix it also stays noticeably cooler than a dark surface through a Perth summer, which is the practical difference between a back area that gets used in January and one that does not.

Big trees are the usual reason we get called

The streets backing Carine Open Space have established trees, and established trees lift concrete. It is the single most common cause of the cracked and raised driveways we take out here.

If a root has got under your slab, resurfacing it will not hold. The root is still growing. The fix is to take the section out, deal with what is underneath, and replace it properly, which is worth knowing before you pay for a patch that will move again.
