Concreters in City Beach

City Beach · Limecrete Amber White, honed in house, 85m2

A honed alfresco, ground back by us

The job on this page is 85 square metres of honed concrete at a City Beach home, poured in Limecrete Amber White and then ground back to the finish you see in the photos.

The grinding was done in house, by the same crew that poured it. That matters on a honed job more than on almost any other, because the finish is decided at the grinder, after the slab has cured. How far it is taken back decides how much stone shows. When the people pouring and the people grinding are the same people, the level agreed with the owner is the level that ends up on the floor.

Out with the old paving

Before this job the area under the patio roof was old red brick paving, stained and weedy and running out into sand and grass at the edges. That all came up.

What replaced it is one continuous slab. It runs under the gabled roof, past the posts and the sliding doors, and around the corner of the house along the side, so the whole back of the property is a single surface instead of paving in one place and sand in the next.

What honing does to Amber White

Amber White is a pale mix. Honed, it shows a scatter of brown, grey and dark stone through a light base, and the close-up photo on this page is the best look at it. A pale honed floor under a roof keeps the alfresco bright, and it stays more comfortable underfoot in summer than a darker mix would out in the open.

It is also a smooth, even surface, which is what people want an alfresco floor to be. The honest trade off is that smooth shows marks more readily than a textured finish like exposed aggregate does, so it wants sealing and a bit of looking after. On a covered outdoor room that gets swept and lived on, that is usually a fair deal.

Right up to the glass

Along one side the slab runs straight to a glass fence, with a lawn on the other side of it. Concrete that meets glass has nowhere to hide: the edge has to be straight, and the finish has to run cleanly to the base of the fence line, because the glass puts the join on show from both sides.
