A pool surround that is also the alfresco floor

The job on this page is an exposed aggregate pool surround at a Sorrento home, poured in Limecrete Coral White. The same surface carries on under the roof of the covered alfresco, past the brick posts, and down the side of the house, so the whole back of the property is one finish from the sliding doors to the far end of the pool.

That is the way to do a yard like this one. The pool starts right where the roof ends, and if the alfresco and the surround were two different surfaces, the line between them would read as a border instead of part of the same outdoor room.

Washed the same day, for a smoother finish

Exposed aggregate gets its look from washing the top layer of cement off the slab so the stone in the mix shows through. When that wash happens changes how far the stone stands out of the surface.

This one was washed off the same day it was poured, to give a smoother aggregate. Around a pool that is the point. People walk it barefoot and wet, kids run on it, and a finish with the stone standing proud can be hard going underfoot. A same day wash keeps the grip and the look of exposed aggregate while taking the edge off it.

The pool edge

The edge of the pool is done in the same exposed aggregate as the rest of the surround. There is no tiled coping or second material laid on top, just the one surface running square to the water. The close-up photo on this page shows it best.

Coral White by the water

Coral White is a pale mix. Exposed, it reads as near white from a distance, and up close it is a fine scatter of small dark, grey and brown stones through a light base. Next to the blue of a pool it keeps the whole yard bright, and a light surface in full sun is a lot kinder to bare feet in January than a dark one.
