Pool surrounds are most of what we do here

Gwelup has a lot of pools, and on the blocks around here the concrete surrounding one is usually the whole backyard rather than a border. That changes how it should be approached: it is an outdoor living area that happens to have a pool in it, not a pool that happens to have a path around it.

We poured honed concrete surrounds wrapping a backyard pool and continued the same surface out to the adjoining outdoor living space. Running it through in one finish is the point. Stopping the concrete at the pool coping and starting something else a metre later is what makes a yard feel chopped up.

Honed is a good choice around water: ground back it is smooth without being slick, it is comfortable to walk on barefoot, and it takes the pale tones that keep surface temperature down in summer.

Skimmer boxes and edges are the detail work

The parts that decide whether a pool surround looks properly finished are small: a flush skimmer box lid, a clean line at the coping, and fall set so water runs away from the house rather than pooling at the back door. None of it is visible when it is right and all of it is obvious when it is not.

The lake side is different ground

Towards the lake the water table sits higher than in most of the suburbs we work. If a job involves excavating below existing levels it is worth flagging at quote stage rather than finding out partway through.
