Concrete Driveways
Limecrete Kajaani White
Most of a driveway is the part you never see
The finish is the decision people enjoy making. The base is the one that decides whether the driveway is still sound in ten years. Sandy Perth soil is easy to work but it has to be properly compacted, and the slab has to be thick enough and reinforced for what will actually park on it. A driveway that only ever sees a hatchback is a different specification from one a loaded dual cab and a boat trailer live on.
If a quote does not mention preparation, thickness or reinforcement, it is quoting a surface rather than a driveway.
Replacement is a different job from new
On established streets most driveway work is removal first. Breaking out old bitumen or cracked concrete and carting it away is real labour and real tip fees, and it belongs in the quote as its own line rather than buried. Anyone who prices a replacement the same as a fresh pour has not looked properly.
Water has to go somewhere
Fall is the thing people forget until the first proper winter. A driveway needs to shed water away from the house and away from the garage door, and on a sloped block that can mean a grate at the low point rather than just a tilt. Getting this wrong shows up as a puddle that never dries and, over a few years, as cracking at the edges.
Crossovers
The section between the road and your boundary is council’s, not yours, and it usually has its own requirements for width, levels and materials. It is worth sorting before the pour rather than after.
Choosing a finish for a driveway specifically
Exposed aggregate for grip and for hiding marks. Honed if the look matters and the parking is gentle. Plain grey with a non-slip finish where the budget should go into the base, which on a steep block is often the honest answer.
A recent one
August 2026 in Karrinyup: a failed bitumen driveway taken out and replaced with non-slip grey. Bitumen goes soft in a Perth summer and once it breaks up at the edges there is no sensible repair, so removal was the only real option. Plain grey with grip was the right call there because the block has genuine fall and the money was better spent on the base than the surface.
Where your driveway actually starts
On a new build the plain grey slab between the kerb and your boundary is the crossover, and it is built to the council’s specification rather than yours. Your driveway starts at the boundary line.
That is worth knowing before you choose a finish, because the two will always be different surfaces meeting at a joint. It is not a defect and it is not something we can pour around: an exposed aggregate driveway running up to a grey crossover is what almost every new build in Perth looks like. What we can do is make that joint land in a sensible straight line rather than a ragged one.

Before and after
Most of this work is replacing something that has had its day. Here is what that looks like.
Tired original driveway and carport slab taken out and replaced with eucalyptus white exposed aggregate, carried through to the front entrance so the whole frontage matches
Failed bitumen driveway broken out and carted away, replaced with non-slip grey concrete full width from the crossover to the garage
