Narrow side paths are the Scarborough job
On the older Scarborough blocks the strip down the side of the house is usually sand, or pavers that have sunk unevenly, and it is the route everyone uses to get bins out and get to the back yard. It is also awkward to build: too narrow for machinery, often between a wall and a fence, and it has to drain somewhere sensible rather than into the neighbour.
We poured a liquid limestone path running the full length of one of these. Continuous pour, no joints, so there is nothing to lift and nothing for weeds to come through, which is exactly what that kind of run wants.
Wind is a real constraint here
Scarborough gets a consistent sea breeze and it dries a fresh pour faster than most sites. That shortens the window for finishing and makes an even result harder to achieve. It is one of the few places where we will occasionally recommend moving a pour a day rather than fighting the conditions, because a rushed finish on a windy afternoon is visible for the life of the slab.
Salt, sand and rentals
A lot of Scarborough property is rented or let short-term, and the sensible brief there is different: hard-wearing and low-maintenance beats fashionable. Pale mixes handle salt haze better, and a sealed surface is far easier to keep looking reasonable when nobody living there is going to maintain it.
