Grey Concrete

Sometimes plain grey is the right answer

Every other finish page on this site is about making concrete look like something. This one is about not doing that, and we recommend it more often than you might expect.

If the budget is finite it is nearly always better spent on preparation, thickness and reinforcement than on the surface. A well-built grey driveway outlasts a decorative one poured on a poor base, and building it properly does not cost more. We would rather say that than upsell a finish.

Where we actively suggest it

Steep driveways. A non-slip grey finish grips well, and on a slope grip matters more than looks.

Working surfaces. Shed hardstands, garage slabs, side access, bin pads. Anywhere a vehicle or machinery lives, a decorative finish just costs more to damage.

Areas nobody looks at. Money spent on a hidden side path is money not spent on the alfresco.

Rentals and investment properties. Hard-wearing, cheap to maintain, straightforward to repair.

Grey does not mean unfinished

There is still a decision to make. A broom finish gives directional grip and is the workhorse. A trowelled finish is smoother, for covered areas. A non-slip additive can go into the surface where there is fall and water. Colour consistency matters too: grey varies batch to batch, and a large area poured across two loads can show a line if it is not managed.

Where we would talk you out of it

An alfresco you sit in every evening, or a pool surround. Those are the surfaces you look at and walk on barefoot, and they are worth spending on. Grey there is a false economy.

A recent one

Karrinyup, August 2026. Failed bitumen driveway taken out and replaced with non-slip grey. The block has real fall, so grip and drainage mattered more than the finish, and the budget went into the base.
