Concrete Patios & Alfrescos

Holcim Geostone Architectural White

The threshold is the whole design problem

An alfresco almost always opens off the house through a large slider or a stacker. Whether the space works comes down to what happens at that opening. If the outdoor floor sits well below the indoor one, or changes material abruptly, the inside stops at the glass. If the levels are close and the surface reads as a continuation, the living area feels like it runs outside.

That has to be set before the pour, working off the existing floor level, the door track and the drainage requirement all at once. It is not something to sort out later.

Water still has to leave

An alfresco under a roof still gets wet, from driven rain off the open side and from hosing it down. It needs fall, and that fall has to run away from the house, which is in tension with wanting the level close to the indoor floor. Resolving those two things is most of the setting out.

Choosing the finish

Honed for a smooth continuous look, especially where an indoor concrete floor is being matched. Exposed aggregate where there is more foot traffic in and out from a pool or a lawn, or where the speckle is wanted to hide use. Pale mixes in both cases if the space catches afternoon sun, because a dark alfresco floor in a Perth summer is hot enough to notice.

Two we did

North Beach. A wattle white exposed aggregate alfresco running out to a honed patio under a white pergola, both poured as part of the same renovation so the levels and the mixes were set together.

Woodlands, August 2026. A honed alfresco in Limecrete Coral White, matched to the driveway at the front of the same house so the property reads as one decision rather than two.
